Drinks: Homemade Basil Lemonade

I love lemonade as much as the next gal, but I also love adding new flavors to old classics. By infusing some sweet basil, I gave this old fashion drink a refreshing spin. It might sound fancy, but it's incredibly easy! You can also try using rosemary, sage or mint instead.

You'll need:

1/4 cup of organic sugar (granulated sugar will also work)

3 lemon halves

3/4 cup water

1/4 fresh basil leaves, torn

For the basil syrup:

In a small sauce pan, heat sugar and water over medium heat until syrup begins to boil. Reduce heat and add torn basil leaves into the pan. Let basil leaves steep in syrup on low heat for 5 minutes while "bruising" leaves with a wooden spoon. This will help release flavors and oils into the syrup. Increase heat until syrup boils once more, remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

For the lemonade:

Squeeze the juice of one and a half lemons into a medium pitcher. Remove any seeds that may have fallen into the juice. Add 6 cups of water to the pitcher or until the desired tartness is achieved and stir. Add basil syrup into the pitcher until desired sweetness is achieved.

Pour over a glass of ice and garnish with a few basil leaves and your favorite summer berry. For an adult twist, try a splash of vodka or pisco.
